Τhe main goal of the design was to create a residential space, functioning as a contemporary, small hosting unit. A pocket hotel-room if you will. Faced with creating 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and a dining area, as well as a common room, within the confinement of a 70sq.m. elongated floor plan, the design aimed at a multifunctional layout, configurating the program while keeping the space as open as possible, thus promoting a relaxed and soothing habitat.

The design incorporates materials addressing the modern – urban culture (via the use of exposed concrete and brickwork), combined with a fusion of elements inspired by the traditional Japanese aesthetic and layout (use of black and white framework, light – screen doors, wooden surfaces, built -in furniture, use of an internal garden as well as an outer courtyard), thus creating a living space – scenario “close to the floor”, through the use of patios, multileveled spaces and built-in furniture.

APOLLO HOUSING COMPLEX

Loutraki is a recognized spa town (Loutropoli), since 1925. Due to its proximity to the city of Athens it always served as an ideal resort, commonly connected to the memories and activities of a traditional spa town, with its mineral waters and thermal springs.

The plot is situated directly on the seafront. The study called for a housing complex of approximately 1068sq.m. gross area. One of the client’s wishes was for the design to distinguish the masterplan into four different buildings, so as to be managed separately. That request together with the vertical – lengthy axis of the plot’s geometry, led to the shaping of a slightly curved, central path along which the buildings would assemble. The design sought out, to create the structure and feeling of a small – linear neighborhood by shaping the main mass of the building into smaller clusters, forming terraces, shelted shadowy areas and private yards, all the while producing the image of individual residences working together as a community, with the common road acting as their unifying element – the commonplace of this little village. The shaping of the building’s mass and the sequence of terraces aimed at allowing all of the residences to have unhindered view of the sea. The selection of materials, the form of the buildings and the close connection of the residences to the road and its happenings aims at working in sync with the laid back, open and carefree feeling of the place, often associated with summer, holidays and outdoor activities in general.

Artifisiel < A specific method for processing and working on the surface of the mortar applied on walls. This technique was widely used during the 60’s and 70’s. Several layers of coating including marble and cement mortar were applied gradually, with the use of coloring materials applied inside the mixture in situ. After the hardening of the materials, the carving of the surface would begin, in a similar fashion to that of stone carving, using several – usually handcrafted – tools. Thus giving a unique and different texture to each surface depending on the tools used and the craftsmanship of the artisan. The advantages of the method were that the surfaces needed no further coloration but were instead colored by the several matters applied inside the mortar itself, and also its ability to give a sculptural quality in the outer surface of buildings. The technique was gradually abandoned after the 70’s for the use of cheaper and faster methods of coating.

The house, build during 1972, is a typical for the era, detached structure surrounded by a courtyard. Several features on its exterior – telling of the 60’s and 70’s idiom used on the era’s suburbia housing- were utilized as a starting point, for the unfolding of the inner spaces. Complex ironworks on the openings, circular windows and corduroy glasses were used, with the main material focus of the interior, centered around a newly applied, handcrafted artifisiel wall, framing the view of an existing tree on the outer courtyard.

The residence comprises from a basic vaulted room dating back to aprox. 1600, and an earlier two storey addition to it. The design was faced with a total re- construction of the house so as to meet modern day demands.
