The second installment in the Open Food Market area, (consisted by producers – growers, distributing their own products directly to the public), this Butchery was designed as part of a duology together with its ‘abreast relative’ – Fish market -. Its incorporating similar materials, in a slightly different manner. In an effort to create a common underlying feel, with yet notifying differences, combining distinct lines with a warm atmosphere, thus creating a singular character, fitting for its specific use.

The project is sited in an open Food Market passageway in Athens, consisted by producers – growers, distributing their own products directly to the public. Several materials like metal meshes, stainless steel, concrete based floors and blackboards were incorporated, so as to create functional spaces as open and transparent as possible, while serving the image and overall atmosphere of an open air market, incorporating the flow of the street into the passageway. Glossy tiles interchanging between white and deep blue were used in a herringbone pattern, along with several other blue colored finishes, in synergy with the blue colored sign of the store, while also being reminiscent of sea and wave patterns.

It was decided during the main review of the space, that the concrete on the ceiling and sidewall should be revealed. The ceiling was kept in its bare form, with the electrical and mechanical installations running exposed, in organized formation. The sidewall was hammered in order to remove all the pre-existing plaster markings, as well as exposing the gravels within, emphasizing on its sculptural quality and materiality. These gestures shaped the boundaries and main features of the containing shell. The internal space was conceived as a metal web, expanding in all directions, forming the divisions and functions required. A sort of multifunctional furniture containing space and its uses. Thus, keeping it as open as possible, maintaining its transparency, while allowing the natural light (a prominent feature of the space), to flow through it freely, through the use of permeable – lightweight structures and movable partitions, dividing space whenever necessary.
